Donor Services
Purchase and Storage agreements are available to guarantee donor of your choice. Pre-purchase agreements are available for clients wishing to reserve specimens for a second pregnancy by the same donor.
Consultation for photographic donor matching to recipient's husband or partner is available upon request as well as consultations to aid in the donor selection process.
We require documentation of resulting pregnancies and live births from insemination sites and facilities. Pregnancy Data Forms are sent with every shipment and helps us to track and limit the number of pregnancies per donor
We offer this program to patients interested in using a donor known to them. A sperm donor who is known to the recipient but is not a sexually intimate partner is referred to as a “Directed Donor” and requires a similar screening process to that required of an anonymous donor.
The screening process takes approximately 6-8 months during which time your donor will complete the following steps:
A staff member will conduct a consultation with the directed donor and the recipient to discuss the entire process. A complete medical history will be taken and a semen analysis and test freeze (helps to assess the survival rate of sperm after the freezing process) is performed to assess the donor's specimen quality.
The Directed Donor will be asked to complete a physical examination performed by one of our physicians. Our medical director will review the medical history and determine all testing required. Initial Blood Test and 1st Retained Semen Specimen: The initial blood draw for general health and infectious disease testing will be performed on the same day the donor collects his first retained semen specimen. The testing cannot be omitted or waived. A semen analysis analysis is performed on each retained semen specimen.
The donor's family and medical history will be reviewed and genetic testing will be discussed with the donor. After a review of medical/genetic history the genetic counsellor will decide if any additional testing is required.
The psychological evaluation is performed by a clinical psychologist or social worker. The purpose of this evaluation is to assess, as best as possible, the directed donor’s current mental status. Many potential issues are addressed, for example; the reasons and motivation of the donor, family history, sexual history and possible future infertility. In addition the donors are counselled regarding the potential psychological impact of being the genetic parent to a known child and their role in the child’s life.
The donor may collect additional semen specimens by appointment as recommended by the referring physician. The number of collections may vary and depends on the quality of the sample and plan of treatment for recipient.
The standard quarantine period for semen specimens is six months. The recipient's referring physician may request a quarantine period of less than six months by advising the recipient of risks and requesting a waiver.
Following the quarantine period, the donor must complete a final blood draw in order to release the specimens. The recipient will be given an approximate date for specimen release at that time, however, we cannot guarantee that the specimens will be released on a specific date or become available at all. Once all the test results have been received and reviewed by the medical director the samples will become available. We are responsible for all phases of testing, processing, storage and distribution of sperm samples from directed donors. Please note that if the Medical Director does not approve the donor due to issues such as positive test results, the vials may not be able to be released.
A staff member will contact the recipient when the samples become available for release. The samples can either be picked up by the recipient or designated person at Repro Lab, shipped out in our dry shippers via FedEx or delivered by our courier(Manhattan only). Please contact us at least two business days prior to when you need the samples. You may also continue to store any remaining vials at our facility for future use. To arrange an initial consultation or for more information, please contact us at 212-779-3988.
Our donors are university students, college graduates, or post graduate students. Our qualification process is vigorous and includes everything from an extensive medical evaluation, genetic testing, and psychological evaluation. Strict criteria are set for the acceptance of prospective donors. Nine out of ten potential donors are denied participation in our program. All of our donors receive a medical genetic evaluation including a physical examination, a detailed family history and ancillary tests.
All of our semen donors meet relevant FDA eligibility requirements. All tests are performed in CLIA certified laboratories using FDA approved tests. The donors must test negative or non-reactive to the required tests on initial evaluation. The donor specimens are held in quarantine for at least 6 months after which the donor is retested and found to be negative or non-reactive prior to the release of the samples for clinical use. A summary of records used to determine donor eligibility will accompany each specimen shipment. This record lists each of the tests and results.
An in-person, detailed personal and three generation family medical and social history review is conducted with prospective donors by medical staff members to identify any known risk factors for infectious diseases or genetic conditions. Those with no known genetic or infectious disease risks then undergo a thorough examination to look for any physical evidence of such diseases. Upon review of the history of the medical director and geneticist determine if any additional testing is necessary.

All Donors:
Expanded Genetic Screen - Tests 283 Genes
(effective as of 6/2018)
Chromosome Analysis
Our semen donors undergo psychological screening by our licensed clinical psychologist or social worker.
As of 6/2018 all new donor participants have the Expanded Genetic Screening. It now tests for 283 genetic diseases including all of the above.
Infectious disease testing is repeated every 3 months and the history and physical examinations are performed every 6 months while the donor participates in our program.
All frozen donor semen is quarantined for a period of 6 months, at which time the donor is retested and must be found negative for all infectious diseases prior to release of the samples.
A short profile is two pages long providing personal and demographic information, family medical history and the results of genetic screening tests performed on the donor. All short profiles are available on our website free of charge
A long profile is 20 or more pages in length and provides a detailed three generation medical and genetic history, the donors personal information such as physical attributes, favorite music, favorite color, SAT scores, hobbies, etc. This long profile is the original document the donor completed in his handwriting. The long profiles can be purchased by calling our office. We strongly encourage reviewing the long profile before making your final donor choice
Donor personal essays are an opportunity to experience a more introspective side of a donor. Get to know "who" the donor is beyond his medical records and statistics. He describes his personality, likes and dislikes, traits, family members and achievements. Donor essays are available for most of our donors. The essays are presented in a question and answer format. Donor Essays vary in length and are available at no charge to clients. The essay is part of the long profile.
Donor matching is to help with the selection process. This optional program involves matching a photograph of the client, husband, family member or other individual to donor photographs.
Repro Lab offers baby photos for many of our donors. The photographs feature donors from 3 months to 12 years of age. Please note that the quality of the baby photos varies depending on the originals supplied by the donor. Some baby photos are in color and some are black and white. Most donors will have a series of 2-3 different photos available; some may have only one or possibly no photo at all. Childhood photos are available for individual purchase. Photos are printed in 4x6 and 5x7. Contact us by phone at 212-779-3988 or by Email for more information.
The donors who participate in this program are donors who, after consulting with our psychologist, have agreed to become known to the offspring in the future. We must have a documented pregnancy and birth report on record. The offspring must be at least 18 years old when they make their request. The child must contact us in writing. After we have confirmed the information we will contact the donor and he will establish method of contact.
Repro Lab is committed to providing donor semen specimens of the highest quality. We evaluate each specimen prior to release to ensure that it mets our high quality standards. A post thaw analysis of sperm count, motility, and grade value is included with every donor specimen shipment. IUI specimens are processed and ready for intrauterine insemination.
Both standard ICI specimens (specimens prepared for intracervical insemination) and IUI ready specimens (specimens prepared for intrauterine insemination) are available.
ICI specimens have a volume of 0.8 to 1.2cc per vial. The post thaw motility is a minimum of 30% and we guarantee a minimum of 20 million motile sperm/ml.
IUI ready specimens have a volume of 0.5 to 0.7cc per vial. The post thaw motility is a minimum of 30% and we guarantee a minimum of 24 million motile sperm/ml.
Our stringent specimen identification processes are a combination of electronic systems and repeated physical confirmation. Our reproductive cryotechnology specialists are experienced, efficient professionals who rigidly adhere to identification protocols.
Racial coding systems help to identify the race of the donor. Color-coded cap inserts are on all our donors cryovials: White caps for Caucasian donors Brown caps for Black donors; Yellow caps for Asian donors; and Orange caps for Hispanic donors.

CMV is Cytomegalovirus.
Negative results are consistent with no previous infection. If the Total Antibody test is positive, reflex testing (CMV IgG Antibody, CMV IgM Antibody) is performed to determine if the result represents a recent or old infection. . What is the difference between CMV IgG and IgM tests? A positive CMV IgM result is consistent with a current or recent CMV infection. A positive CMV IgG result in combination with a negative CMV IgM result indicates past exposure to the CMV virus. These results are consistent with a normal immune response.
DONOR SPECIMENS ARE HELD FOR THE REQUIRED SIX MONTH QUARANTINE PERIOD AND ARE RELEASED ONLY AFTER NEGATIVE RESULTS FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES ARE OBTAINED
